SLES 12 64bit Xen - Creating a new SLES 11 SP 3 64bit VM

Ref: https://www.suse.com/documentation/sles-12/singlehtml/book_virt/book_virt.html#idm140510501611968

We are testing SLES 12 Xen and have run into a couple of issues. The first one seems silly, but it appears intentional. For some reason, Suse disabled the ability to create a supported paravirt domu from an ISO for a supported paravirt OS with virt-install. See: http://www.rpmfind.net/linux/RPM/opensuse/updates/13.2/noarch/virt-install-1.0.1-14.7.1.noarch.html - 14 March 2014 in the change log notes:

  • We are not supporting PV ISO installs with virt-install.
    Drop the following patches
    virtinst-allow-pv-iso-install.patch
    virtman-allow-pv-iso-install.patch

This seems to be a regression as the feature worked nicely in 11 SP3. I’m sure there were good technical reasons for this, however how can one create a PV xen domu without using a network install?

Hi salisburyk,

let me forward that question to my SUSE contact - maybe a SUSE developer is willing to share some background information.

Jens

Thanks, Jens. I am curious what the issue was.

I’ll get back to you when I have a response… so far, I’ve not heard back but will give this a few days…

Hi salisburyk,

the response I received indicated that indeed virt-install does not provide this functionality… but if you use vm-install (manually, or through the drop down arrow to the
side of the installation icon in virt-manager), it should work.
