SLES12 black screen after grub booting

on SLES 12… twice now, I got a popup saying online updates are available…
I click install… they install fine…
Then when I reboot, I get a black screen after the grub boot screen and It just sits there…
I haven’t found a way around it…
I just keep reloading the server…

is there anything I should do next time, other than pay attention to what updates are being applied and post those…

this time I tried running UPDATE from the SLES12 install media…
and that fixed the black screen issue…
but it majorly changed the Kernel boot options…

Hi
That sounds like graphics issues, what gfx card do you have?

hwinfo --gfxcard

You could try booting with the nomodeset option temporarily. When the
grub screen appears press the esc key to stop the countdown timer,
select advanced boot options, highlight the default boot option and
press e (to edit) arrow down to the line that has showopts, just before
there add the word nomodeset and press F10 to boot.

You could also just boot in recovery mode (which includes nomodeset)
to see if it boots.

I was going to try the nomodeset option, but couldn’t figure out how to change the parameters… thanks for telling me… ‘e’

I noticed after running the UPGRADE that the Tivoli Storage Manager 7.1.1 rpm’s that I had installed, quit working…
I ran rpm -U --force TSM*.rpm

and TSM started working again…
but, the server quit booting again, this time instead of a black screen I get the SUSE logo and the first of the 4 circles is green, and it hangs there…

TSM was working and the server was rebooting correctly before the updates got installed, must be a conflict between TSM and one of the recent updates…

OOPS… my fault… just realized I was accidentally installing TSM 7.1.0 instead of 7.1.1
I upgraded and that fixed my boot issues…
