Stuck at emergency mode after reboot... related to RAID?

I have a Dell PowerEdge T110, running Suse Linux Enterprise Server 11 SP1 kernel 2.6.32.12-0.7. I don’t believe kernel was ever upgraded. The OS resides on a RAID array (2 disks in RAID 1), /dev/system, which I guess is also dev/sda1,2,3,5,6; there are another 2 non-OS disk in a second RAID 1 array, /dev/sdb, all 4 disks behind the same Dell SAS 6/IR controller card.

I’ve rebooted my server in the past without problems…
but this time, after having gone into Dell’s SAS 6/IR LSI config utility (control-C in the early bootup stages), just to check what was in the RAID array there – I don’t believe I made any changes – but upon reboot cannot get past
“Started /boot” message, just after some fscks have been run. See attached photo (sorry, can’t figure out how to get text off the server, can’t mount a usb stick… can’t find what device it resides at)

Doing ctrl-D or systemctl [pretty much anything] results in error message:
failed to get D-bus connection: no connection to service manager

in output of
systemd-journalctl --all
I see “Job dev-system-home_lv.device/start timed out”
and following that are multiple lines ending with "failed with result ‘dependency’ "
indeed, /home directory is empty (not mounted)
/etc/mtab has same lines repeated multiple times, which seems odd.

I ran fsck on /dev/mapper/system*, all clean (couldn’t run it on root_lv since it’s mounted)
I ran Dell’s hardware diagnostics (SMART tests etc) on the hard drives in the RAID array and the controller, all passed. On the other hand in the LSI SAS RAID utility it says “Yes” under Predicted Failure for one of the non-OS disks, so I removed it from the RAID array just in case… still same behavior at bootup.

See attached photo of fstab. I never changed these initial entries.

Any ideas? Not sure what to do next. I’m waiting on a call from Alttech, who took over Novell’s tech support.

here is /etc/fstab as text:

/dev/system/root_lv / ext3 acl,user_xattr 1 1 LABEL=boot /boot ext3 acl,user_xattr 1 2 /dev/disk/by-id/scsi-3600508e000000000ddcaa4fbb94d7704-part5 swap swap acl,user_xattr 0 0 /dev/system/opt_lv /opt ext3 acl,user_xattr 1 2 /dev/system/srv_lv /srv ext3 acl,user_xattr 1 2 /dev/system/tmp_lv /tmp ext3 acl,user_xattr 1 2 /dev/system/usr_lv /usr ext3 acl,user_xattr 1 2 /dev/system/var_lv /var ext3 acl,user_xattr 1 2 /dev/system/home_lv /home ext3 acl,user_xattr 1 2 proc /proc proc defaults 0 0 sysfs /sys sysfs noauto 0 0 debugfs /sys/kernel/debug debugfs noauto 0 0 usbfs /proc/bus/usb usbfs noauto 0 0 devpts /dev/pts devpts mode=0620,gid=5 0 0

strangely, /etc/mtab has many repeated lines:

if I type
mount -av
I get a message that the /dev/system/* partitions are already mounted (but they aren’t, e.g. ls /home is empty)
I can mount them manually one by one and then they show up properly, though their line in /etc/mtab looks the same as earlier ones.

mount /dev/system/home_lv /home
ls home shows what I expect (not empty), and there is a line in /etc/mtab
/dev/mapper/system-home_lv /home ext3 rw 0 0
which looks the same as the earlier lines

Here is dmseg output:

Hi mpelc,

dmesg shows anomalies for the SATA disk (sdc) - is it part of your system volume group?

Concerning /etc/mtab, have you tried moving it out of the way and creating a new, empty one?

Regards,
Jens

Thanks for reply. sdc is unrelated, just an external hard drive I connected.

I tracked down the problem to a vsftpd package I installed in July. It in turn installed systemd and a number of other packages which altered how the OS booted. I am not sure why exactly this caused boot to fail. In any case I gave up and reinstalled the OS. I was able to mount the OS partitions and back up all the system data, so restoring shouldn’t be too much of a headache.

Hi mpelc,

thanks for letting us know how things turned out!

I tracked down the problem to a vsftpd package I installed in July. It in turn installed systemd and a number of other packages which altered how the OS booted.

This then was no SLES RPM  (but rather sounds like an opensuse RPM, as that distribution has already switched to systemd). I strongly recommend to only install what is required on a server and known to you, and as can be seen in this case, unknown packages can cause a lot of harm (although the “unknown package” itself need not be harmful nor malicious - it may simply be, as in your case, unsuitable for the target system).

Just for the records (and others stumbling across this thread), there’s a SLES-supported vsftpd package included in the SLES distributions. I assume that for whatever reason, you were looking for a different (probably newer) version of that software, and came across some RPM not intended for your version of SLES.

Reinstalling the OS may well have been the best choice and I’m glad to read you’re back on track.

Regards,
Jens
