Upgrade Windoze 2008 to Windoze 2012 when running as a VM

Hi,

Running SLES12 with XEN virtualization.

I am trying to upgrade one VM that is running Windoze 2008 to Windoze 2012. I have attached a CD drive to the VM and can see the CD disk. The CD is the Windoze 2012 server disk. When I run setup.exe the Windoze VM complains with the following error:

Windows 8.1 installation can only be started from Windows 7… and a bunch of other stuff.

Any ideas on how to perform the upgrade.

Regards
John

This would seem to be a Microsoft Windows Server issue rather than with
SLES.

Are you trying to upgrade to Windows Server 2012 or 2012 R2? The
difference is important since you can’t upgrade from 2008 to 2012 R2 so
I’m guessing that’s actually what you’re trying to upgrade to and if so
please see https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dn303416.aspx

Hi,

The upgrade was from Windoze 2008 to Windoze 2012 R2 and according to MS this should work…but as luck would have it, the Windoze guys now want a brand new Windoze 2012 R2 VM so problem solved

Simon, thanks for your help.
