I wish I could understand why recent Novell products continue down the
standalone monitoring route and insist on embedding Ganglia for
“monitoring”
All monitoring attempts seem to revolve around enabling individual
products rather than anything useful.
We already monitor SLES, Windows, network devices, printers etc etc with
an excellent monitoring product.
It does eveything we need and integrates network, flow, disk, VM etc
with coordinated alerting and reporting
There is an open standard for this that most of the planet uses - its
called SNMP
SLES has it built in - and OES which by its very nature relies on SLES,
ignores all of the capability of its host OS and instead seems to seek
out the most obscure way to provide monitoring.
However, it seems that each of the Novell products that were moved to
NetIQ are gaining SNMP monitoring.
In desperation we now use standard tools in SLES to monitor Tomcat to
try to get some kind of view into the apps like Filr, Vibe & ZCM. But
Groupwise, iPrint and the others are essential hidden from us.
The ability to effective monitor the services we provide is getting more
and more important, yet OES (and GW, Filr, Vibe, ZCM etc) is getting
more and more marginalized and already sits on the outside of the
centrally monitored realm.
The monitoring tools I have in place already have built in monitoring
for Exchange, Sharepoint, Windows server, SQL Server, Oracle, Linux,
Network etc.
Soon it will get to the point that the inability to integrate Novell
products into standards based (SNMP) enterprise monitoring tools will
preclude them from use and we are perilously close to that now.
