This is probably a really dumb question but my ‘Applications and Places’
on the bottom bar are now ‘Places and Applications’. How do I swap them back ?

Where are you seeing this? Can you possible post a screen shot?
Which version of SUSE Linux Enterprise Server (SLES) are you using?
Please post the output from “cat /etc/*release”.
