Cannot connect to xen with virt-manager after upgrade to SLES12 SP5

After upgrading my xen host from SLES 11 SP4 I can no longer connect to xen with virt-manager.

When I start virt-manager I see Xen - Not Connected
Whel I double-click on that message, virt-manager quits completely and in the /var/log/messages file I see

Also, the GUI on tty7 never gives me a login.

I was thinking about installing SLES12 SP5 as a new installation since all my vms and their configs are not on the root partition, but I’d certainly welcome a simpler and less precarious approach.

Thanks in advance,
Dan
