Desktop icons not shown anymore in SLE 15.4

Please move this one if there’s a more appropriate forum.

Applies to both SLES and openSuSE: after upgrading to SP4 (and also on a fresh install with SP4 media) desktop icons don’t get shown anymore on a Gnome desktop with “SLE Classic” scheme.
They do in fact get created in the “Desktop” folder but have no effect.
Years ago we could work around such an issue by enabling “show-desktop-icons” underneath “org.gnome.desktop.background”, but this doesn’t seem to help this time.
The behaviour is the same on SP4 FCS boxes and on fully patched systems.

Did this ever get resolved? I’ve just installed OpenSuSE 15.4 LEAP, and am experiencing the same behavior. The icons are getting created in the Desktop folder, but they aren’t shown on the screen.

That’s been resolved quite some time ago. For sure it is in a patched-to-current SLES15SP5, but i’d guess the fix has been backported to SP4 either.

@michael.vanhorn Hi and welcome to the Forum :smile:
You should look at upgrading your system to Leap 15.5 as 15.4 is end of life, I suspect upgrading will fix your issue, else ability to create a bug report if not…

Sorry, I typed that. I already am using 15.5. That’s why I was asking. I’m new to SuSE, I can’t imagine people have never been able to have icons on their desktops and been okay with it.

@michael.vanhorn ahh ok, so if you open a browser and go to https://extensions.gnome.org/ add the plugin and the go to installed extensions is the ‘desktop icons’ extension activated? You also need to select SLE Classic at login…

That extension was installed, but it wasn’t turned on.

Where should I look to enable that by default for all users?

@michael.vanhorn so that got it working for you?

@michael.vanhorn have a read here: https://help.gnome.org/admin/system-admin-guide/stable/extensions-enable.html.en

Yes, turning on the extension worked. I have since figured out how to enable it for everybody (I think) from
