Error during registration, registration failed.

I get an email from root occasionally from our various servers with:

Subject: Error during registration

Message:
Registration failed.

How do I turn off whatever is attempting to register? No, I do not need to know how to register for updates or patches, etc… I just want to know how to stop this annoying alert email.

Thank you!

Check these files (smt-client is probably not present but the other one is, and that should be responsible for the emails).

ls -l /etc/cron.d/

-rw-r–r-- 1 root root 38 29. Nov 19:01 novell.com-smt-client
-rw-r–r-- 1 root root 63 18. Okt 10:42 novell.com-suse_register

That’s probably it. I only had novell.com-suse_register in /etc/cron.d. I removed it so hopefully it stays quiet. Thanks for the help.

Hello,

I found the same cron-job some days ago as well on a customer system. If I understand
this corretcly and the messages in the file /root/.suse_register.log, this cron-job is “phoning home”
to Novell.com and transmitting some technical information about the server hardware etc.;

Is this legal in Germany? The customer’s Admin waas not aware about this job.
