So my response to Black’s comment is…
My thoughts exactly. Or the fact you have to give rights to every
****in folder level down the tree to give someone access to a folder
several levels deep…[THUD]

That did not make it win out over NetWare. The aggressive Stealth
Marketing Novell ran, and the plethora of GUI only computer experts,
that’s what did a technically superior product in.

And to this day M$ has stuck behind the whole GUI only thing… oh
wait, no they haven’t. “A server doesn’t need a GUI.”

Makes me so glad I am running OES.

I’m also glad you’re running OES.

We still have a little OES here, enough to run our Groupwise
environment.

BetaMax vs VHS?

I still have one Netware box - in the process of moving it to a
virtual machine. I really liked Netware but I’m getting more
comfortable with OES Linux…and really liking it.

Good analogy. In both cases, technical superiority proved to be no
match for massive marketing campaigns and/or vendor partnerships.

Last time it wasn’t a grand experience. Curious as to what you use
to back up the box. There wasn’t a large range of options last time
I messed with it either.

What wasn’t? OES Linux? OES 11 is quite good.

To backup OES Linux and Netware, I am using Arkeia. I really like it.
Much better than the old Backup Exec I used to use.

Well I am actually playing with OES11 SP2 right now and right off the bat
the installer barfed with “Failed OES Preconfig. This is a problem worth
reporting to Novell.”
Just downloaded off Novell this AM and the md5sums are correct so it
is a shipping bug. Not seeking support, just providing feedback. These are
the kinds of things that don’t instill confidence. Didn’t even get to a
login before it starts throwing errors.

To further not give the warm fuzzies. When I go to search bugzilla, nowhere
does it say OES under the product dropdown. So, no way to check if it’s been
submitted already. Clicking on Enter a Bug report, gives me a page:
“This webpage has a redirect loop.” and bombs.
What can I say except. Wow.

Might be worth checking in the OES forums.
Might be worth checking in the OES forums.
Yah, but this is what I’m talking about when I say,
not a grand experience. I’ve got it installed and running,
but there’s a level of fit an finish lacking from the old
Netware days. The SLES stuff is fine obviously but the OES
side seems a bit half baked still. I mean less than an hour and mucking
about in support forums? This is why MS won. I’m sure I can make it sing and
never visit the forum but the level of time and effort is inordinately high.
Granted the payoff might be worth it, but most won’t bother, opting to go
the ‘easy’ route with Windows and pay for that ease on the backend with a
management nightmare. Needs to be simpler and less buggy.
Any word on the migration tool? Is it any good or have crippling bugs as
well?

I did have to get NTS involved with a couple of my OES 11 servers, but
I put that down to my inexperience with Linux. And since then they
have all been solid servers.

So my response to GofBorg’s comment is…
Getting all my servers to sles11sp2 and oes11sp1 has drastically
stablized everything from the sles10sp3 & 4 days.
Same as what Ken said, migration tool worked fine for me every time.
