Install SLES remote over network.

Hi Forum,

which way would you suggest to install SLES via network?

I’m testing network based setup with a server with pre installed linux (CentOS 6) where I want to install sles11sp2.
Problem is that I don’t have any access to use a install medium like floppy, cd or a usb drive…
The only way seems to be via network, but there I’m stuck…

Thanks in advance,
Pascal

Setup a PXE server so you can boot from the network, and then also on
that same machine setup an installation source (HTTP, FTP, NFS,
whatever) and have your PXE service serve up that installation source as
the place from which to boot. Lacking any of the other options you
mentioned I assume this is how the system was meant to be installed, and
once you have the network install source and PXE stuff setup subsequent
installs will be a breeze.

Good luck.

Hi,

that’s one good method which I am using if I have access to setup a tftp server in this network. In this case I don’t…
I tried to use the kernel/initrd from the cd/dvd and started them via grub.
Normally that should work, but I ran into a problem with the network card like in this thread: http://forums.opensuse.org

In some forums the said you have to unload the tg3 module then load the broadcom module and again tg3. Unfortunately if I use the kernel/initrd from the dvd there is no broadcom module.
Then I started to build a new initrd with the needed module but again stuck with a similar message like this:
Could not load modules … modules.deb not found

For now I call it a day and will give it another try tomorrow…

Thanks so far.
Pascal
