Can anyone tell me where to find an iso image of a Live DVD, the kind that boots right off the disk and gives you a chance to dig around and get used to the OS without making changes to my drive?

I do not think SLES provides one of these as shipping media, though you
could go to SUSE Studio, setup a free account, and then build a SLES box
there trivially and then run it to see how things look on a system that’s
basically out-of-the-box. Comparing the time to do that with the time to
download an ISO, it’s likely faster to go through SUSE Studio and will
give you the same results, plus you can customize things a bit to get a
sample of a box as you would build it, not just with default packages.

I tried that, and the download came down as a GZ instead of a burnable ISO, which is really what I’m looking for.
Sorry, I should have been more clear. SUSE Studio lets you run it there
without downloading anything via the Testdrive feature. Of course, if you
want more than an hour-long testdrive you’ll either need to build again
(modifications usually going in, but not required) or to download. The
service lets you choose several different formats, and I’m guessing you
did not have the LiveCD/DVD option chosen, so be sure that was selected as
the default media type (or as an additional media type; you can have
multiples built per build).

I’m sorry, I should have been more clear. I selected the LiveCD/DVD option and it still came down as a GZ.

I think you can build one at http://www.susestudio.com - Live media is an
option, and SLES is an option, so it should be possible to do that.
Another option would be to use a virtual machine.

What’s the filename you ended up with?
It may well just be that the iso is zipped and needs to be unzipped.
gunzip [filename]
Will do that. Or if you’re on Windows, Winzip or pretty much any other
popular compression/archiving tool will handle that.

Okay, I see what I did wrong. I clicked Preload ISO under the Additional Formats section, but missed changing the Default Format to .ISO
I shall now hang my head in shame for performing such a (l)user mistake.

As ab said, we’re not in the habit of removing threads - the history
might be useful (and I’ve also done the same thing). It’s a good thing
you didn’t boot from the media, though - I don’t remember if it prompts
before overwriting the drive. 
But I’m glad you got it sorted out.
