Yes you can. Just tried it on our NW 6.5 sp8 server running BorderManager. Copied a folder with 100’s of files. Deleted the folder (copy). Went into salvage and salvaged the folder (copy). Now the folder will be empty BUT you can run salvage again against the “salvaged folder”. Doing so I recovered all files.

This is something I have always wondered about.
When a person deletes a file it is available in salvage.
When a folder is deleted everything is lost and you have
to go to tape.
True or False? I’ve never been able to recover a deleted
folder and its contents, just me?
Yep. You are right. Must’ve snuck in on me as I
was thinking along Jim’s lines. Does appear to work
on this server, but it is hard to distinguish between
what might be a directory versus a file.

If I remember correctly, Salvage can recover files from deleted folders,
but not the deleted folders themselves.
That’s how I remembered it as well, although apparently untrue if using NSS.

I’m gonna stop now, before I get scolded for answering a support
question. :-)
As it’s a defunct product, not sure if it’s still illegal talk. If it is…
nothing to see here, move along.

The contents could be recovered from DELETED.SAV, but the directory
couldn’t without restoring from backup.

It can on NSS.

Ah, that’s new. I wasn’t aware of that. The last time I dealt with
deleted files the server was 3.11 - but it was within the past couple of
years, helping out a relative of a former boss of mine.

I’d be pressed to remember how to work on a 3.x server …

I was pretty hard pressed, too - fortunately, I found I still had media
available at the time, so I was able to set one up to try to remember. I
also still have a copy of ODRN, which really surprised me (especially
when the diskette was still readable).

Did you forget about the NLM I sent you? It not only recovered deleted
files but also walked the deleted directory structure and recovered it.
I wrote it for a client who lost an entire disk with 1000’s of
directories and over 500K of deleted files (IIRC). They spent a day
recovering files manually (a couple hundred directories and a few
thousand file) until I could get them the NLM which restored the rest in
20 minutes or so.

Oh, yes, I do remember that. I was thinking about the standard
behaviour, but yes, that did help for the case I was looking for (sadly,
it looked like most of the files that were missing ended up purged.)

Got it. Thanks for the reply.
That’s correct, it isn’t recursive. Which can be a pain if you have a
big folder structure deleted. Fortunately there is a tool called
Salvage98 (google it) which gives you a nice GUI and will recursively
salvage files/folders and their contents.
