release date for sled 11 sp4

[COLOR="#B22222"]gentlemen,
i have accidentally discovered the release notes for sles11 sp4 and according to some documentation i have found on the 'net, it should be available during the first semester in 2015.
https://www.suse.com/releasenotes/x86_64/SUSE-SLES/11-SP4/

do you have a more accurate date/month for a SLED release?

i’m looking forward to having this final release for the sled11 series and stick with it for several more years, since this is the last time i see gnome 2.28
not really fond of gnome3’s tablet/ipad/iphone-like desktop interface.

thanks for sharing additional news.
cheers.

[COLOR="#B22222"]off-topic & food for thought: i have found these interesting articles/discussions about SLED/SLES:

SLES life cycle: http://www.softpanorama.org/Commercial_linuxes/Suse/sles_life_cycle.shtml
SLES service packs: http://www.softpanorama.org/Commercial_linuxes/Suse/Upgrades_and_patching/service_packs.shtml
[/COLOR]

[COLOR="#B22222"]and another reason to stick with sled11sp4 is because it doesn’t use systemd.

read more here: http://www.softpanorama.org/Commercial_linuxes/Startup_and_shutdown/systemd.shtml
systemd is becoming the Svchost of Linux – which I don’t think most Linux folks want. You see, systemd is growing, like wildfire, well outside the bounds of enhancing the Linux boot experience. systemd wants to control most, if not all, of the fundamental functional aspects of a Linux system – from authentication to mounting shares to network configuration to syslog to cron. It wants to do so as essentially a monolithic entity that obscures what’s happening behind the scenes.

Excellent debate about systemd and more to read and study from that link.

Do you assume that no women read these forums?

More relevant to the SLED forum would be the SLED 11 SP4 release notes
https://www.suse.com/releasenotes/x86_64/SUSE-SLED/11-SP4/
though the title still says SP3. If you keep an eye on those release notes you may find that an indication of the release date gets added near the top at some point. It happened with the SLED 12 release notes. (It is usual that release notes for upcoming SLED versions are discoverable in advance of release by fiddling with the url of the release notes for the current version.) From what I’ve heard SP4 is planned for the first half of 2015, but obviously that’s not official.

Have you tried GNOME 3’s GNOME Classic mode? Or the SLE Classic mode which is what SLED 12 defaults to? GNOME Classic is the good things about GNOME 3 but without the jarring lack of anything at all familiar on the screen when you first log in. SLED 12 defaults to something called SLE Classic, which is basically GNOME Classic but SUSE have decided to modify it to remove the top panel. GNOME Classic is also included though.

You would do better to refer to the SUSE documentation. Life cycle information is at
https://www.suse.com/support/policy.html
That link you posted about ‘SLES Service Packs’ contains inaccurate information and speculation rather than fact. (E.g. ext3 is the default in SLES 11 SP3, not brtfs)

[QUOTE=ofvergara;25609]and another reason to stick with sled11sp4 is because it doesn’t use systemd.
[/QUOTE]
Pretty much every distro has adopted systemd. Discussion of it’s pros and cons seems irrelevant as far as SLED is concerned. SLED 12 has systemd and that’s not going to change during it’s lifecycle. If you are unable to unwilling to use a version of SLED that contains systemd then you may want to look at https://www.suse.com/support/programs/long-term-service-pack-support.html (Do you have a SLED subscription? You previously indicated that you haven’t https://forums.suse.com/showthread.php?5530-how-to-install-latest-firefox-thunderbird-on-sled11sp3&p=24557 )

Are you making all the text in your posts red on purpose?

[COLOR="#B22222"]Hi Mike,
thanks for replying.

You got me on that one, i thought women may not lurk in here. since i don’t know that, i’ll modify my introduction in future posts.

yes, i thought sled11sp4 was behind because the link was pointing to sp3, that’s why i got confused since the release notes for sles11sp4 were already out.

on the other hand, i prefer stable & proven distributions and i have really liked sled11. i’m not into trying something new every couple of years like opensuse. i don’t have the time to play with computers anymore like i did in my younger years.
the moment i believe i’m ready for it i will eventually jump and try to like gnome3 with the classic gnome mode. that’s encouraging for people who are accustomed to the good old interface (like me)…

about the links i posted, it’s something i found on the internet regarding sled/sles that i thought were important readings. never realized they were inaccurate.

now that i studied some more about systemd, there are basically two opposing teams so far: in favor & opposed.
in the meantime, as soon as sled11sp4 is out, i’ll reinstall my operating system and get a subscription for it until i’m ready to move on to something new.

A final question: do you know the value for a 3-year subscription for sled11sp4? (not for companies, for myself only)

and about the red font, yes, i have been using this font (at least in the corporate world) for over ten years and i thought i would replicate it here as well.
Cheers and thanks again for your reply.

Assuming that by ‘value’ you mean ‘price’ then that information can be found at https://www.suse.com/products/desktop/how-to-buy/shop.html SLED licenses are not version specific.

[COLOR="#B22222"]Hello there,
SLED11sp4 has just been released !!
get it here: https://download.suse.com/index.jsp

not many differences noted against SLED11sp3, mostly updates for programs, especially firefox and it still displays the nice & beautifully polished gnome 2.28, curently running with a few desktop effects applied.

installation went perfect, registered my 3-year subscription during installation. no issues at all installing bumblebee, which was my main concern.

the only drawback i had so far was due to numbering changes in dependencies, so i was not able to install bleachbit, even though i had it installed correctly in sled11sp3. i’m typing from a brand new installation. i’ll add more programs over the following days and report any other program issue.

other than that, i like sled11sp4 very much.

cheers.

From https://www.suse.com/lifecycle/ I read that SP4 will get just two
month more patches than SP3:

SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop 11 24 Mar 2009 31 Dec 2010
SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop 11 SP1 02 Jun 2010 31 Aug 2012
SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop 11 SP2 29 Feb 2012 31 Jan 2014
SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop 11 SP3 01 Jul 2013 31 Jan 2016
SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop 11 SP4 15 Jul 2015 31 Mar 2016

“31 Mar 2016”? Is this a typo? Does not make any sense for me to go
through this upgrade just for two month worth of support.

Günther

Hi Günther
Reported to my SUSE contacts to check (but I think it’s a typo…)

I’ve heard back from my SUSE contacts and it seems that 31 March 2016 is
actually the correct date for the end of General Support for SLED11 as 7
years from when SLED11 first released.

I would have suggested upgrading to SLED12 but have noticed that the
lifecycle doesn’t include SLED12 so I’ve now reported that.

SUSE product manager/SUSE support say that 31 March 2016 is the correct date for the end of General Support for SLED11.

[COLOR="#B22222"]
i read here: https://www.suse.com/lifecycle/
that sled11sp4 ends both “general and extended support” on 31-mar-2016.

what about the 3-year subscription i bought a few months ago?
am i still going to receive patches as “self-support TBD”?

also i see, that general support for sles11 ends on 31-mar-2019… why?
i thought sled & sles were very close to each another in terms of rpm packages and architecture.
therefore, patches & upgrades should be very similar for both, since i think they share the same core components.

waiting for your comments.[/COLOR]

Thank you and Simon very much indeed for sharing the information. So I
actually have to hurry in order to get a working configuration for
SLED12 and without the Novell tools for Linux within four months.

[/COLOR][/QUOTE]You receive new security patches for SLED11 until 31 March 2016.
You can update from SLED11 to SLED12 with no extra charge. You receive new security patches for SLED12 until autumn 2018.

Answer from SUSE Support:
<< SLES has 10 years general support life time.
SLED only 7 years. >>

[COLOR="#B22222"]
thank you Andreas for your reply.
if i knew beforehand that support for sled11sp4 ended in march 2016, i would only have bought a subscription for 1 year instead of 3.

i am not interested in upgrading to sled12 due to personal reasons: don’t like gnome3 (i checked the classic mode and still not as good for me as gnome 2.28) & still don’t trust systemd (i thought it was only a replacement for the old init daemon but it now wants to handle everything. a good balanced dissertation can be found here: http://www.zdnet.com/article/stepping-into-the-systemd-quagmire/ )

that’s why i bought a 3-year subscription, so i could stay longer with the sled11 version that i like.
{sigh} when the time comes, i’ll decide what to do on the topic. for the time being, i’ll keep using my sled11 version.

cheers.
