Routing stops

Hi,

One of my servers randomly quits routing traffic to the internet.
rcnetwork restart “fixes” it for a while, sometimes a week, sometimes a
day.

NOWS SBE
It is the only server on this network.

cat /etc/SuSE-release

SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 10 (x86_64)
VERSION = 10
PATCHLEVEL = 4

cat /etc/novell-release

Novell Open Enterprise Server 2.0.3 (x86_64)
VERSION = 2.0.3
PATCHLEVEL = 3
BUILD

There are 2 NICs. This server has been running fine for a couple of
years. Now this started happening in the last few weeks.

It is fully patched.

Thanks
Bob Crandell

If you upgraded your NOWS SBE server to the versions shown, that is
likely the problem.

That is really mean. You could have at least blamed the hardware.

March was a long time ago. Has this changed at all?
“There are currently no plans to make OES2SP3 compatible with NOWS SBE
2.5.”

I can’t tell you how much I don’t want to reinstall this server.

Thanks. I’ll go have a talk with them.

No! That’s just the way it is with NOWS SBE. :frowning:

Well, there is good news:

Novell Open Workgroup Suite for Small Business
http://www.novell.com/products/openworkgroupsuite/smallbiz/

Your NOWS SBE license now gives you the full NOWS. You are no longer
hampered by the many NOWS SBE restrictions. It’s not often we get a
second chance to “get it right”!

This thread is worth reading:

I hope you don’t think of it as more bad news. If you survived a NOWS
SBE installation, installing SLES/OES is a breeze.

Now that we know this is an OES system, you should post further
questions in the NOWS SBE or one of the OES forums.

Good luck!

Turned out not to be the server at all. It was a network switch with a
bad port. Oh Happy Day.

I’m glad it was an easy fix, even if it took a while to diagnose.
Nobody likes those kinds of surprises!

The versions of SLES and OES used in NOWS SBE are ancient. You should
start planning how migrate to current software versions before you
really do have a server problem!

At the risk of going too far afield, I can do an in place upgrade to SLES
11 and it’s OES without breaking things. Right?

Thanks
Bob

Well, you can’t upgrade a 32 bit system to a 64 bit system and if this
is a NOWS SBE system installed from the NOWS SBE media then it can’t be
upgraded.

IMO, it’s better to know the what you’re up against ahead of time than
have to correct a costly mistake!

This is true and that’s why I asked. Now I’ll be meeting with them to
schedule a time to do this.

Thanks
