SLED 12.2 How do I customize the taskbar

I can’t work out how to change the taskbar at the bottom of the screen.

How do I make it bigger?
How can I change the format of the clock?
How do I move it to the top of the screen?

Hi
Some tings are built into the Gnome Shell and can’t be changed…

In system settings and then select Tweak Tool and you can select a check box to add date etc.

No, this is defined…

Now, you can look at gnome shell extensions at https://extensions.gnome.org/ for tweaking your desktop.

Thanks for the reply.

I tried a Gnome Shell Extension and ended up with a crappy looking taskbar and an error, I had to go and delete the extension. This was after needing to install Chrome to enable some ability to enable extensions. Thats a lot of steps just to change a taskbar. I thought I must have been overlooking something so I came here to ask.

I assume this is the direction that Gnome 3 is going it, I’m going to look at alternatives as Gnome 3 doesn’t seem to meet how I think a desktop environment should work.

Personally I feel like these basic features should be standard options in a desktop environment.

Hi
Firefox 45 ESR version in SLE 12 SP2 works fine with gnome shell
extensions, sounds like you updated to the NAPAI free version from a
third party source? Else use epiphany, no need to install chrome or
derivatives…

Have a look at package hub;

OK so I gave epiphany a go and it seems to install extensions OK, however I’m not having any luck.

The first one I tried was the same one I tried yesterday, Dash to Panel.

After installing it my taskbar at the bottom disappeared and I needed to rm -rf .local/share/gnome-shell/extensions/dash-to-panel@jderose9.github.com and restart gnome.

Then I tried TaskBar. This gives an error and in gnome-tweak-tool it shows an exclamation mark and it can’t be turned on.

I did have a terminal window open and noticed a bunch of errors appear when I tried to install it.

I deleted the extension through Installed Extensions and confirmed that it didn’t exist in /home/troylea/.local/share/gnome-shell/extensions

Tried again but same problem.

Surely I’m missing something obvious, it shouldn’t be this hard.

[COLOR="#B22222"]hi guys,
just my opinion, but this is one of the setbacks that hold me from moving from my stable (and loved) gnome 2.28 desktop in SLED11SP4 to any newer gnome or SLED.
gnome3 is just not my style. i strongly prefer the classic gnome 2.28 look instead (due to my age maybe?) :wink: , in which SLED started introducing back in SLED10 in the novell days and successfully continued with SLED11.

i also tried the gnome3 classic look in my brother’s laptop (newest opensuse), and i didn’t really like it. you can’t do anything to the bottom bar, it just displays open applications. i could not add anything else to it (no clock, or widgets)

my suggestion is that you try MATE desktop environment which is a fork of the gnome2 interface. i can tell that my original gnome2 environment is highly customizable. not sure about MATE but probably is, as well.
also, i am not sure whether it’s available as a desktop environment option for SLED12 at the log-in screen.

Thanks for chiming in, it’s always good to hear other opinions. I have been using Linux Mint MATE for some time now and I do like it. However it’s been occasionally unstable so I’m looking at other distributions and SLED has been appealing because it nicely handles a 4K resolution, everything is appropriately sized out of the box.

I have thought about trying to add MATE to SLED but then it starts to feel like I’m over customizing it. If SLED produced a distribution based on MATE it would give me more confidence that it is supported.

On the other hand, if Gnome 3 allowed customisation of the taskbar easily I wouldn’t be so fussed. I just have a style of working and right now SLED with Gnome 3 doesn’t seem to work for me.
