SLED hangs during installation (ATI 3600HD ?)

Hi All .

Trying to show my 12 year old son the joys of Linux , but having some problems during installation. I have a desktop (specs attached below) with 2 HDs . I created 10Gbs of free space on hd2 and began the instalation there . I reach the checking hardware stage of the installation . It says that it’s going to probe my video card (ATI Radion HD 3600) and that I may see some flickering . I see no flickering . After about 1m the screen goes black and a large white mouse cursor appears . And that’s that. No more messages . I have to power off and on to get the system back . When it does come back I get the Suse boot menu . Selecting Linux takes me back to the (failed) installation menu and I go through it again and it fails at the same point . I have since repaired my MBR and deleted the free space that I created , but I’d like to try it again .

I’m presuming that it’s my video card that causing the problem ?

Any help would be appreciated as my son is looking at me with a strange expression as if I should know how to fix it …

Thanks

Sammy

Are the boot menu, do you have an entry with failsafe in the name?

Can you move this large white mouse cursor?

If no to both of them, you could try re-installing and using Text Mode. When you boot from the installation DVD there’s an option to change the video mode by pressing F3. You might hit graphics problems later on, but if you can get through the installation it should be easier to sort out. When you register your copy of SLED you should get the ATI repo added for propriety ATI driver.

Are you using SLED 11 SP2? If not, get it and try installing that instead of whichever version you’re currently using.

Many thanks for replying . I won’t be able to work on this isse for a couple of weeks , but I’ll post back with the results once I do .

Thanks again !
