Suma 3.1 and SLES upgrade to SLES12.SP2

Hi All,

I am unable to work through the reference and best practise guides in regard to the upgrading an exsisting SLES 11.SP4 host to SLES12.SP2. The guides speak of a provisioning option in Systems=>Systems=>All page and select the Details from the host page to enable an upgrade. This option does not exist except for the Systems Set page, ONLY if no system is selected, but once a system is selected it goes away.

Does anyone know of a way to do the upgrade from within Suma 3.1? Thanks. :confused::confused:

Hi
Select the system in question, then Software → SP Migration should provide details on migrating.

Thanks for the reply Malcolm. I still cannot proceed as it returns the following. So is there a way to ready a system from here? I would expect to have to add the SLES 12 SP2 base channel to the host but I cannot figure out how this is done.

Service Pack Migration - Target
There is currently no migration available for this system. Either the latest Service Pack is already installed or possible target products are not available. Please use the Setup Wizard to identify and add missing products.

Not possible because it is the latest service pack sp4. Sp migration is only for service pack upgrades.

Hi
So you have a test system to try things out on? If so, one wonders if adding the SLES 12 SP2 base channel to the SP4 system and then logging in via ssh, disable the sp4 repos and using YaST wagon or zypper dup to upgrade.

Have a read through this document;
https://www.suse.com/documentation/sles-12/book_sle_deployment/data/cha_update_spmigration.html

Do you have the SLES 12 SP2 base channel (or earlier versions?) etc added to SuMA?

Else you would need to look at doing an offline upgrade via install media;

Hi Guys,

Yes I do have a test environment to play in so if it breaks, no biggie. When we go to prod there are some 55 servers to upgrade to SLES12 SP2 so I need to have a nailed down method to do it that I can trust. I can do them all by iso image but would need to re-register them after or only register them to Suma after they go to SLES 12.2. Thanks for the help, greatly appreciated. Now for some light reading. :slight_smile:

Going from SLES 11 SP4 to SLES 12 SP2 is not a SP migration, but a major distribution upgrade.

You can do this in Manager with a specially crafted Autoyast file which starts the distribution upgrade workflow in YaST.

Hi KWK,

Yes, I am aware that it is an upgrade to a new release but I am trying to figure out how to achieve this in Suma 3.1. I cannot follow the reference doc as it is wrong in this respect. So I need to know if Suma can do it and how it is done. Therefore if you know of any links to the crafted Autoyast file, I would be grateful. Thanks.
