SUSE won't boot up from local hard disk

Hello Every body,

i have a project that deals with back up the system to tape drive. we couldn’t find the tape drive path so, we install some packages then we rebbot the system. but the system won’t boot , it is stuck on “booting from local hard disk …”

The system is SUSE SERVER 11 SP2. Tape drive is Dell RD1000.

Please, i need help or my professor would give me 0 on my project.

Hi
Boot from the install DVD in rescue mode and check the disk boot flag
is set;

fdisk -l /dev/sdX

Thank you for your replay, here’s what i did:

#grup-install bootdevicepath /dev/sda
WARNING! You are trying to invoke the unsupported grup-install script with a parameter .To really do this , call grup-install. unsupported. You should rather call yast2 bootloader" or create configuration files appropriate the intended target.

Also, i did
#df -h
tmpfs 16G 0 16G 0% /dev/shm

Also,
#cd /boot/grub/
bash : cd : /boot/grub/: no such file or directory

Thats what i got!

Hi
But what do you get from the fdisk command? In rescue mode, nothing is
mounted…

Hi
The system doesn’t use UEFI booting does it?

If not then looks like something has happened to the partitioning…

At the rescue prompt, if you run;

smartctl -a /dev/sda

There is only one local disk?

Hi
OK, so this is a RAID controller, are the disks ok in the system BIOS,
configured etc?

That would indicate something is up between the RAID controller and
disks.

What do you mean about this :

Hi
There is a controller card that the disks are attached to, or is it
just one disk in the system? The controller card is at the BIOS level
of the system. You need to reboot and look and check all is ok with the
disk(s).

Else whatever you changed before rebooting is perhaps not loading the
driver (perc controller driver) to recognize the disk(s).

Hi
Honestly I’m at a loss…

So your booting from the install medium to get to rescue mode or via
the grub menu?

If booting from the install media, what happens if you select boot from
hard drive?

If you let the system boot (even if it fails) what happens if you press
ctrl+alt+F10 to get to the kernel messages, anything there? To get back
press ctrl+alt+F1 or F7.
