how will Rancher adress the new release cycles for docker in both ce and ee versions (monthly/quarterly)?

EE is just relabeling the previous “CS Engine”, there’s nothing fundamentally new there. You can pay Docker for support and patches beyond what they do public releases for (which used to only the current 1.X).
It’s really too early to tell about CE. We will definitely support the “stable” / $month % 3 = 0 releases, but it is not clear yet when exactly they’re going to releases to line them up with ours, or what the quality of “edge” releases is going to be.
