Thinkpad T520 LAN PCI Half Mini Network card not recognised

Hi

I am trying to install my copy of SUSE 11 SP1 on my new Thinkpad T520
The Thinkpad has Windows 7 already on it, so I am trying to dual boot
it.

My copy of SUSe 11 SP1 installs fine, but when I try and configure the
network, it says that it “cannot configure the network card because the
kernel device (eth0, wlan0) is not present”

The Windows 7 configuration is as follows:
Network card: Wireless LAN PCI Express Half Mini Card Adapter
Driver: Realtek Semiconductor Corp

I also noticed that it does not seem to recognize the Video Card which
again in Windows 7 displays as a
“Intel HD Graphics Family”

Therefore it will not allow use of advanced graphics i.e. the fancy
cube etc …

Please advise how I can at least get SUSE 11 SP1 to recognise the
network card?

Regards

Hi
More than likely the kernel driver is not present for the 2.6.x kernel.

Can you provide the output from the follow command (just for your wlan
device)

lspci -nnk

Hi
I don’t see a wireless device in the list above, can you look through
the output from the command;

dmesg |less

Is there any reference to the wireless device, there may also be an
entry requesting firmware?

Can you also install rfkill (as root user);

zypper in rfkill
rfkill list

There is nothing in the dmesg that I can see relating to a Wireless Lan
or wlan or whatever …

I cannot install rfkill
When I try to as su I get the following error:

Loading repository data…
Reading installed packages…
‘rfkill’ not found.
Resolving package dependencies…

Nothing to do.

I googled the problem and found something about the Laptop having a
Wireless LAN Half Mini Card adapter that the OS cannot recognise?
… which sounds correct as the operating system continually tells me
that it is unable to configure the network card because the kernel
device (eth0, wlan0) is not present

I stronglu suspect that it is the Half Mini format of the wireless LAN
card that’s causing the problem.
Not sure if SUSE/ Novell have a fix for this … maybe a SP2 or 3 or 4
or whatever perhaps ??

Hi
Can you try an openSUSE LiveCD of GNOME (just runs from the CD) from
here;
http://software.opensuse.org/121/en

If it recognizes the device, can you post the output from the above
commands.

Hi again …

Well I downloaded the copy of Open SUSE 12.1 and burned it onto a DVD
and installed it on my Laptop
It installed OK and left the Windows 7 rubbish on the drive also … in
dual boot mode

I configured the network for a static IP Address and connected to my
router no problems.
Loaded up Firefox and went straight to opensuse.org

So what do I have here?
What is the difference between my old SLED 11 SP1 and this OpenSuse
12.1?
Do I have to pay for this version?
Can I get the spinning 3D cube working on this version? … and how? …
I’ve tried but can’t see it anywhere obvious.

… Yes I know the 3D cube is rather dull to most of the guru Linux
set, but hey I like it.
That’s one of the reasons I bought SLED in the first place because I
saw it on an IBM bods machine in a tutorial and thought it was exclusive
to SLED.
(Only found out later that it is apparantely available in Ubantu also)

As my old copy of SLED 11 is now out of the 12 month support mode and I
don’t know if I have to pay another $50 to get the latest version, or if
the latest version of SLED will work like this version does … I’m
somewhat confused …
(Note: As a Lotus Notes programmer who has to work full time in a
Windows environment, you can probably tell that I’m not overly
knowledgeable about Linux, I try to install and play on my holidays etc
… I’d really like to get a Notes development environment up and
running on Linux some day … that’s my immediate reason for the playing
with this stuff … )

The dump of dmesg is below … 4yi
(Note: The rfkill command still did not work)

Hi again …

Well I downloaded the copy of Open SUSE 12.1 and burned it onto a DVD
and installed it on my Laptop
It installed OK and left the Windows 7 rubbish on the drive also …
in dual boot mode

I configured the network for a static IP Address and connected to my
router no problems.
Loaded up Firefox and went straight to opensuse.org

So what do I have here?
What is the difference between my old SLED 11 SP1 and this OpenSuse
12.1?
Do I have to pay for this version?
Can I get the spinning 3D cube working on this version? … and
how? … I’ve tried but can’t see it anywhere obvious.

… Yes I know the 3D cube is rather dull to most of the guru Linux
set, but hey I like it.
That’s one of the reasons I bought SLED in the first place because I
saw it on an IBM bods machine in a tutorial and thought it was
exclusive to SLED.
(Only found out later that it is apparantely available in Ubantu also)

As my old copy of SLED 11 is now out of the 12 month support mode and
I don’t know if I have to pay another $50 to get the latest version,
or if the latest version of SLED will work like this version does …
I’m somewhat confused …
(Note: As a Lotus Notes programmer who has to work full time in a
Windows environment, you can probably tell that I’m not overly
knowledgeable about Linux, I try to install and play on my holidays
etc … I’d really like to get a Notes development environment up and
running on Linux some day … that’s my immediate reason for the
playing with this stuff … )

Hi
So from your output, it’s a rtlwifi driver;

[ 16.835822] rtlwifi: wireless switch is on

/sbin/modinfo rtlwifi
filename: /lib/modules/3.1.0-1.2-desktop/kernel/drivers/net/wireless/rtlwifi/rtlwifi.ko

[ 216.848936] rtl8192c_common: Loading firmware file rtlwifi/rtl8192cfw.bin

openSUSE releases every eight months so short release cycles, then it’s
supported for updates for 18 months… and it’s free as well  We also
have a openSUSE forum (forums.opensuse.org).

With 12.1 there is no more GNOME 2.x with compiz (spinning cube etc),
all GNOME 3.x which is the new desktop design.

Sometime early next year there should be an SP2 release (I need to
check if the driver is in that version). You could look at renewing
your update subscription then to get updates? I normally purchase the
three year basic (just updates) as it works out about $35 per year.

Also you do get updates to newer releases if your subscription is
active.

Hi
So I’ve checked my beta copy of SP2 and it has the kernel wireless
driver for your hardware, so it’s just a matter of playing the waiting
game

Malcolm

Is the beta copy of SP2 you mention for SLED 11? or are you referring
to an SP2 for the Open SUSE that I just downloaded and installed?

Also, do you know if there was an rtlwifi driver made available after
SUSE 11 SP1 was released?

I’d like to stay with SLED rather than open SUSE so I can get the 3D
cube graphics

I just checked my subscription and it doesn’t expire until February
2012, so I assume from that that I will be able to download SP2 if and
when it becomes available?

trowling

Hi
Yes it’s SLED 11 SP2 beta, not sure if it will be released in Feb, it
will always work, just won’t get updates unless it’s active.
