XP to Windows 7

I’ve looked at USMT
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd560801(v=ws.10).aspx
and it seems to work OK.

If you have migrated XP to Win 7 how did you do it when the PC is not being
changed?

What I am interested in is how did you install Windows 7 on the disk? Had
you a Ghost image or how did you do it?

ZENworks Configuration Management!!!

Does this washcloth smell like chloroform?

Is your hardware even supported (drivers) for Win7? I myself create
images using MS’s imagex command. Then create a usb boot key with the
install image on it (using sysprep to wrap the machine up). Then again,
I’m only dealing with a couple different types of machines here and a
small amount of users.

I can’t imagine doing it without imaging for more than a few systems. Doesn’t
matter what you use for imaging, though, IMO. But you’ve got to preserve the
user data and then put it back on. And give up on trying to transition some
things.

Some time ago I moved from XP to Win7, but wasn’t satisfied with the new
system. Maybe it’s better, but I get used to work with XP. That’s why I
decided to return to the previous OS.

There are probably a lot of people like that. I know some people that
really had a hard time moving from DOS to a gui interface. They
refused to do it for a long time. [cough!DaveKearnscough!] I usually
switch my home machine to the latest just to learn and keep up…but
that can bite you in the butt sometimes [cough!Vistacough!]

Haven’t seen that name in a while.

I’m running Win7 on my home machines…no hurry to go to 8 for me.

kgroneman,

And now some are having a hard time going from the GUI to the CLI (i.e.,
PowerShell). Everything old is new again.

Still on Win7 at work. 8 seems to be a little zippier, but things like
having to have all the folders of the same type have the same view, and
some other minor annoyances make it so I don’t see Win 8.1 as worth the
bother/cost to “upgrade”.

[raising hand and waving it wildly in the air] Me! I really don’t see
any benefit on a desktop machine.

We here at ComputerBase upgrade a lot of Windows 8 computers to Windows 7.

hehe. One of these days Win7 will go out of support just like XP did.
That said, Win7 is a pretty dang good desktop OS.

Not bein no expert or nutin. If Windows 8 is Windows ME version 3 does that
mean Windows 9 will be the next usable version?

We got to enjoy XP for 13 years (2001 to 2014) so that means we won’t have
to worry about upgrading again until 2022 or so.

Hey Preferred User:

I wouldn’t go that far. Windows 8.1 is pretty good but IMHO just not
worth the price of the change from Win 7.

You’ve got until 2020, or so says Microsoft.

I’ll be 65 and starting to think about retirement.

I’ll be 70 and starting a new career.

I used Win7 as well as 8-version, but still consider Win XP as the ideal
system. It’s a pity that it stopped being supported.
