The only place I see kernel-{default/xen}-extra package is in the
SLED 11 SP3 update channel… Is this the package(s).
Or do you have a specific kernel module that is used, perhaps some
details of actual packages would help my search…

the SLES11-Extras channel contained (before SP4 was released):
ext4-writeable-kmp-(flavour)
kernel-(flavour)-extra
and a few others.
Our product needs kernel-extra because the CAN-Modules (sja1000 and ems_pci) are only in this package.
Without those our product won’t work.
If SuSE stopped building these modules altogether for SLES then we are forced to stay on SP3 (on an old kernel) or build our own kernel.
On SLES12 the situation is different. Here the Extra-Modules are in the Workstation Extension, which can be licensed. So they are there, though with additional hassle. On SLES11 they’re missing from the product altogether. Why?
Or are we lucky and the two modules we need have been moved to the default kernel? I didn’t check but it’s not very probable…

They are all part of the kernel (note: tested with SLED 11 SP3), with
ext4 you have to set the rw option…

not true for SLES unfortunately. I checked a fresh SLES11SP4 and SuSE doesn’t believe in CAN-busses on Servers.

ems_pci does not exist
sja1000 does not exist
SLES11-Extras seems to be abandoned completely (zypper complains that it is out of date). Though smt-mirror syncs it every night.
Looks like we need to stay on SP3 as long as we’re selling SLES11. Or we need to nab the kernel from SLED - not sure if there’s license that allows this - probably not.

No you certainly did not.
I have discussed it with the SUSE maintanance team and the packages are still supposed to be there.
Something had apparently gone wrong for this channel during a system switch, but nobody has approached SUSE support about it.
They are working on fixing it now. This thread will be updated once the repository is up and running again.
With respect to CAN-bus modules, I suggest you open a Service Request with SUSE’s support organization, thus this topic can be considered as a feature request for future versions (service packs) of SUSE Linux Enterprise Server.
